Dear subscriber (to subscribe fill in form on home page)
Oh dear, so much to get in – apols. First, a very exciting exclusive for the podcast, an interview with Simon Weller of ASLEF about how the long standing dispute was resolved with the advent of the Labour government. Listen to it here
There’s two other podcasts from the new series covering the Labour conference and the Lime Bikes controversy. In the ipaper, I also wrote about transport issues arising from the conference here
Oddly, I seem to write a lot more for The Spectator these days, rather than my more natural home which would be The New Statesman and here are my latest two pieces – the amazing and wonderful story of the trams competition held annually and the HS2 dilemma
Probably the most important piece I have written recently was an article in the Guardian
arguing the government should scrap all the major road schemes. I also wrote for the Daily Telegraph on the demise of mail on rail
And finally – five new Rail columns on connectivity, how to end franchising, the Parliamentary bills, what to do about HS2 and, most importantly, how Labour needs to change the way that transport projects are assessed
In what has been a busy period, I also appeared in the Panorama programme on HS2 which was widely covered and you can watch here.
And now an innovation – a railway walk. We’ve done a couple of these and they have proved popular. This one is through the City’s backstreets highlighting railway architecture. Join me and Sam Jacobs on November 13. Sign up here
Finally – a really special book offer. I have a stock of Subterranean Railway to give away to anyone purchasing – for the discounted price of £22 post free – either the Liberation Line or the new edition of Fire and Steam which has been reissued in a new edition to mark the 200th anniversary of the railways or rather, next year’s opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. The first 20 people ordering either or both those books will get a free copy of the Subterranean Railway thrown in.
